【第21回例会】Session with “Sporty” performance

On August, 7th, 2008 for Chiyoda Toastmasters Club history was made. There was the first joint meeting between Chiyoda and the Ikebukuro powerhouse, Hibiki Toastmasters club, and also the first full fledge theme meeting. Theme was sports.
The meeting started with a fanfare with 2 Unlimited`s “Get Ready for This” and the introduction of the Away team consisting of “Hanashobu” I-san and “Dragon Lady” K-san lead by the veteran Coach O. Then it was time to cheer on the home team with entrance music of Black Box`s “Pump it Up”. The home team representatives were the fearless “The Assassin” Y-san and formidable “Dr. Noh” H-san and were lead by the up and coming Coach K. Afterwards the referees (i.e. this meeting helpers Timer, Vote Counter and Grahco) were introduced with theme of Bayside Shakedown (踊る大捜査線) and to be fair they were from Chiyoda, Hibiki, and Kagayaki clubs.
There after it was a player from the Hibiki club that introduced Today`s Book, 「野村監督に教わったこと」or “Lessons from Coach Nomura”. We then ran a Japanese Man on the Street Interview (aka Table Topic) where our man from Toastmasters Broadcasting N-san, interviewed several passersby on their opinions related to various influential figures. With the preliminaries over it was time for the big match between speaker vs speaker, friend vs foe, teammate vs teammate for the title of best speaker.
We had three powerful Japanese Speech Fighters. Each speaker was given a typical pro-wrestler like introduction by the MC with theme music to boot.
The first speaker representing Chiyoda club was “The Assassin” Y-san who was introduced with a blare Inner Circle`s “Bad Boys” and gave stirring speech about his life. The second speaker representing Hibiki club “The Dragon Lady” K-san was introduced by a piece by the Yoshida Brothers called “Storm”. She gave a very enrapturing speech on the connections of yoga and her life. The third speaker who was also a Hibiki representative and the Champion of the All Japan Toastmasters Speech contest, “Hanashobu” I-san, orated on the many virtues of interpretative reading. With the curtain closed on three fine speakers we moved on to the sports commentary-like Evaluation session lead by the witty color commentary of W-san. W-san interviewed three commentators, O-san, OT-san, and WN-san on their views of how well each speaker handled their speeches. W-san finished off the some additional commentary on how well the match has been handles so far and had the referees give their reports on the on the match so far.
We then had a short half time with some half-time music by Marrs`s “Pump Up the Volume.” With the halftime over we moved on to the English half of the match. We had introduction of Chiyoda`s formidable “Dr. Noh” H-san with Rip Slime’s 熱帯夜 (Tropical Nights). He also gave a persuasive speech on Cool Biz. This was then followed by up by a short interview of the coaches. Coach K was impressed opposing teams player “Dragon Lady” Japanese since she is a Chinese by birth. Coach O said that both speakers did and god job. Next was our woman on the street from the Toastmasters Broadcasting A-san. She interviewed several pedestrians on their favorite sport or hobby. We then moved by the Commentary session lead again by our jocular host, W-san, who sat with WT-san for a special guest commentary. Finally W-san wrap it up with a few extra words on the rest of the match. In the end a new champion was crowned, but everyone went home happy with a speech well done.

Mr. O
